From suggested listing techniques to our Vehicle Purchase Protection program, eBay Motors helps ensure a sense of security and confidence for both buyers and sellers.
Building Positive Feedback on eBay Is Simple!
- Highlight your attributes as a reputable seller in each vehicle listing and on your "About Me" page
- Use high-quality, professional photographs and well-written descriptions
- Provide complete disclosure with information about damage, large and small. Most used cars have some damage, so don't leave your buyers guessing. Disclosing even the smallest scratch goes a long way
eBay Feedback Forum
All dealers recognize the importance of customer word of mouth and how powerfully it can affect your reputation. What you may not realize is that buyers talk quite a bit to one another in the eBay Feedback Forum.
eBay Motors buyers are encouraged to view your Feedback Profile. The higher your score, the more bids and higher prices you can expect.
Feedback on Sellers
To rate the level of each seller's customer service, eBay offers a Feedback Forum, which allows buyers to comment on the quality of their experiences throughout the bidding and purchasing process. The cumulative comments are then used to generate a score, which is similar to most CSI rating systems used by dealerships. A high (positive) Feedback Score is critical to your success on eBay Motors.
Next to any eBay member's user ID, you'll notice a number – a Feedback Rating in parentheses. This number indicates the amount of times that the member has received positive feedback. For example: "Skippy (125)" means eBay member, Skippy, has received positive feedback for 125 eBay transactions.
At the completion of any transaction, you can leave feedback for your trading partner that is positive, negative, or neutral.
Feedback on Buyers
As an eBay seller, you can also use the Feedback system to "qualify" potential buyers by examining how they've behaved in previous eBay transactions with other sellers. Viewing each potential buyer's Feedback can answer questions about how that person does business.
- State Laws: As a dealer, you are responsible for your regulations. eBay is the marketplace in all 50 states that enables dealers to sell their inventory, but does not enforce regulations for the sale of vehicles through eBay Motors. Conforming to your state’s laws and regulations is YOUR responsibility. In almost all cases, selling vehicles as a business requires a dealer license. If you are unclear as to your legal responsibilities, contact your state's Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Shill Bidding: Do not make the mistake of bidding on your own listing, or having a friend or associate bid on it, to prevent poor listing performance. Regardless of your intentions, this behavior is considered shilling, which is often deemed a criminal offense that will result in your indefinite suspension from the site.
- Listing Policies: Adhere to eBay's listing policies. Violating these policies will result in community complaints, the removal of all affected listings and your indefinite suspension from the site.
- Vehicle Disclosure: Make every effort to accurately represent the vehicles in your listings. eBay buyers absolutely expect the vehicle described in the listing to be exactly what they'll get. Incomplete or false information will often cause problems between you and your bidders, which will lead to negative feedback.
- Dispute Resolution: Handle any disputes professionally. Most bidders are reasonable and will respond favorably if you treat them as valued customers.
- Fraud Prevention: DO NOT give out your password. Any type of fraudulent activity will be treated very seriously by eBay Motors, possibly resulting in criminal prosecution.

Listing has never been easier on eBay Motors.
- Less overhead
- More customers
Before you can start selling, you need to spend a couple minutes setting up your eBay Motors account. Follow these three easy steps and you’ll start selling more in no time.
A. Register as an eBay Motors Dealer
To sell an item on eBay, you'll need to register for an eBay account. This quick and easy process includes setting up your eBay user ID and password, which you'll need for the next step: registering as an eBay Motors seller. The process takes a few days to complete but doesn’t require a credit card. However, there are a few things you should have available before registering:
- A high-speed Internet connection
- Your dealer license information
- The name of the person who will be dedicated to managing your eBay
- Motors business (e.g., you or a Sales Manager)
B. Sign into Your Account
For your security, you'll be required to sign in and verify your identity before using your eBay Motors account. Remember to record your user ID and password in a safe place, as you'll be asked for it from time to time.
C. Create Your "About Me" Page
Creating an "About Me" page offers you the same opportunity that greeting a customer on your showroom floor does – a chance to present yourself as a professional dealer and to establish a lasting impression with the eBay Buyer community.
Your "About Me" page is where potential customers can go to learn who you are and how you conduct business. It's where you help buyers feel more comfortable and assure them that they are doing business with a reputable company.
You can also showcase all of your other eBay Motors vehicles or parts listings on your "About Me" page in a clean, professional, easy-to-browse presentation. Your "About Me" page can include:
- A business biography
- Memberships in local business associations (e.g., Better Business Bureau)
- Special awards or recognition that would be significant to potential buyers
- Terms of sale – how to pay and ship
Your eBay Motors Team
Like many of the most successful dealers on eBay Motors, you can dedicate a person or a team from within your dealership to manage your entire eBay Motors business. This approach creates a focused effort, drawing from current employees' knowledge and experience with your dealership and its inventory.
If you or your sales staff is not computer savvy, you can easily outsource some of the technical details to Solution Providers and handle the management of day-to-day listings yourself.
No matter the route you take, your success ultimately depends on the motivation of the people managing your eBay Motors sales. Their responsibilities will include:
- Creating dynamic vehicle listings
- Properly photographing vehicles
- Actively managing the listing process
- Effectively communicating by phone and email
- Understanding the eBay Motors Marketplace and the auto industry in general
- Managing the back-end services while providing a high level of customer satisfaction
- Apply marketplace knowledge to improve your sourcing and pricing strategy
To effectively create and manage your eBay Motors listings, you must have:
- Internet access
- An email account
- A digital camera with a built-in flash
Today, most digital cameras allow you to download pictures directly to your computer. However, some sellers prefer a camera that uses a memory card to store pictures. Whichever you choose, you'll find that it is easy to integrate photos into your listing.

Listing has never been easier on eBay Motors.
It's important to realize that price alone will not create a bidding frenzy. The formula for driving traffic is a combination of merchandising, price, customer service and the desirability of the item being sold. Additionally, like any retail sale on your lot, you can offer eBay Motors buyers extended warranties, financing and other services, all of which can add margin to your sale.
With that in mind, there are five pricing strategies you can use to attract potential buyers to your listing.
- Auction Style Listing
- Auction Style Listing with Reserve
- Auction Style Listings with No Reserve
- Buy It Now
- Buy It Now with Best Offer
The most basic pricing technique is creating a Start Price to establish the level of the opening bid for Auction Style listings. The key to a good Start Price is setting it low enough so that it attracts potential buyers – preferably several who will bid against one another, driving the price up – but not so low that you won't make a profit. You should be careful not to make it too high, which will scare bidders away.
Auction Style Listing with Reserve
In addition to the Start Price on an Auction Style Listing, you can also set a Reserve Price – a dollar amount below which you are not obligated to sell your vehicle.
To establish a Reserve Price, Top Sellers on eBay Motors often use the price they'd expect to receive at a wholesale auction. When doing this, the seller must realize that, unlike a wholesale transaction, a sale on eBay Motors still allows them to sell additional products and services like extended warranties or vehicle financing.
What you'll typically find with Reserve Pricing is that once a listing meets the Reserve, it usually attracts more bidding activity, resulting in a final-sale figure that is better than wholesale pricing. However, if it appears you won't reach your Reserve Price, you can remove it at any time during the listing, which will enable you to accept the highest current bid.
To establish an effective Reserve Price, follow these tips:
- Set your Reserve Price low. Remember, listing prices can only move up.
- Choose a Reserve Price close to wholesale. New sellers often make the mistake of pricing too close to retail, which results in low conversion rates. You should never end up selling a vehicle on eBay Motors for less than wholesale – if you do, you haven't priced correctly.
- Consider your best alternative for the vehicle. If you want to wholesale the vehicle, set the Reserve Price close to wholesale – minus the difference in the cost of getting it to market – and let the listing do its job. The added benefits of lead generation, up-sell opportunities and international distribution you'll enjoy on eBay Motors make it the best wholesale alternative for your business.
- Set low Start Prices to drive bidding activity. In the eBay Marketplace, bidding activity makes a vehicle look "hot," thereby drawing more and more bidders to the action. Vehicles with high Start Prices and unknown Reserve Prices don't do as well on eBay Motors.
Don't let the "No" in "No Reserve" scare you off. Actually, some eBay Motors Top Sellers swear by Auction Style Listings with No Reserve and the high-risk, high-reward opportunities they offer. But there's no guarantee you'll meet your target price when you run a listing with No Reserve.
With that in mind, the No Reserve strategy takes two forms, each with its own pros and cons.
- No Reserve with a "relatively high" Starting Price (equivalent to a Reserve). This is only recommended for very patient sellers who really understand the eBay Marketplace and who are willing to wait during slow listings. This approach tends to generate very little bid activity, which often ends in auctions without any bids.
- No Reserve with a "relatively low" Start Price. This is only recommended for sellers who really understand the eBay Marketplace and are comfortable turning a profit based on volume. Even though a low Start Price does tend to drive bidding activity and almost guarantee a sale on every listing, it can be a very risky approach. Sellers can take a loss on any vehicle if the bidding doesn't heat up.
Once you establish good standing in the eBay community, you can set a Buy It Now price. This is the price a buyer can pay to end the listing immediately and win the vehicle. You can add the Buy It Now option to any listing prior to receiving bids or before the Reserve is met, making the Buy It Now price any amount above the current high bid.
Buyers tend to view a Buy It Now price as a "sticker price." The Buy It Now option often proves to be an excellent strategy for generating quick sales when you're willing to give a customer a great deal.
To qualify for the Buy It Now pricing option, you must have either a minimum Feedback Rating of 10 or be ID verified. Or, if you have a PayPal account, you need a minimum Feedback Score of 5 and must accept PayPal as a payment method.
Buy It Now with Best Offer
The newest selling technique on eBay Motors is the Best Offer option. It helps sell vehicles even quicker, allowing you to close a listing the moment you receive an acceptable bid, without having to wait until the listing ends. You can choose whether to accept or reject an offer from a buyer.
Many dealers are experiencing great success using Best Offer, especially on listings for vehicles less than five years old, where average sales prices and conversion rates have shown dramatic improvement. You can create a Best Offer listing following these four easy steps:
- Choose the Fixed Price format instead of Auction when listing the vehicle
- Enter your ask price (the Buy It Now price), being sure to select the "Best Offer" option
- Place your Buy It Now price plus "or Best Offer" in the description section of your listing
- Manage your listing by either accepting or rejecting any offer, then begin negotiations with prospective buyers within the text field
You have two options – your choice will depend primarily on how many listings you think you'll create:
- Solution Provider Listing Software
- Sell Your Item (SYI) form for private sellers listing a handful of vehicles
For licensed dealers or sellers creating multiple and or frequent listings, we strongly suggest you use Solution Provider Listing Software to help create and track your listings. The powerful tools on these proven programs allow you to easily generate consistent, professional-looking listings while saving yourself untold hours.
These easy-to-use listing programs help you draft an initial listing that serves as a template for each subsequent listing you create. The software then automates the listing creation process and duplicates any repetitive elements like contact information and Terms of Sale. Any elements that remain constant from one listing to the next will already be filled in – you'll only need to enter the specific description and digital photographs for each new vehicle listing you create.
The result is a consistent and clean presentation from listing to listing, projecting the same professional image you'd expect of anyone on your sales staff.
Sell Your Item (SYI) form
The eBay Motors Sell Your Item (SYI) form is an easy way for a seller to create individual vehicle listings. The SYI is typically the best option for private sellers or dealers who occasionally list a small amount of vehicles on eBay Motors.
In the "Cars & Trucks" tab near the top of the eBay Motors Home Page, select the make and model you wish to track and click the "Search" button. To refine your search to local listings, you can also enter your zip code.
On the next page, click the "See Completed Listings" link that appears above the list of search results. While experienced eBay Motors sellers know that any vehicle can be sold in the eBay Marketplace, new sellers typically succeed best with the following types of vehicles:
- Inventory that is priced to move
- Any vehicle that could benefit from a national audience of buyers
- Out-of-season vehicles (e.g., a convertible in Boston in January)
- High supply/demand constrained vehicles
- Specialty, exotic, niche and collector vehicles
- Vehicle Description: VIN, make and model specifications, mileage and ownership history
- Vehicle Condition: dents, dings, rust, stains and tears
- Digital photos to create the virtual "walk around"
- The Sell Your Vehicle Checklist
- Terms of Sale
- Ending time for your vehicle listing
Before writing your vehicle description, realize your customers may not physically see the vehicle before buying it. Considering that, think about the kind of information you'd prefer if you were in their position. Provide thorough, descriptive and easy-to-read details while fully disclosing any wear and tear.
Gaining the trust and confidence of the "sight-unseen" buyer is easily the most important factor in becoming a successful eBay Motors seller. From the VIN to your Terms of Sale, make sure each potential customer knows exactly what they are bidding on.
The vehicle description is your best opportunity to sell the vehicle as if you were talking to a buyer in your showroom. Using the Sell Your Vehicle Checklist for reference, make sure you include all options, aftermarket parts, and a full description of the vehicle's history and current condition.
Vehicle Condition
Leave no details out, including imperfections – dings, faded paint, scratches, mechanical defects, interior damage, title issues or anything else the buyer would discover by taking a test-drive.
Full disclosure helps win the trust of buyers and may actually help the listing attract more interested buyers. Some buyers view imperfections as "opportunities" for favorable prices.
If you leave something out, a buyer will discover it upon delivery and could leave negative feedback. Remember that positive feedback is critical to a dealer's success on eBay Motors.
Photos
We recommend that you have photos of these parts for your listing:
- Engine
- Trunk
- Any special add-ons, accessories or features denoting trim level
- Close-ups of any dings, dents, stains or other damage
- Wheels and tires
- Gas tank (motorcycles)
- Motor (boats)
- Engine and suspensions (ATVs)
Make sure to take at least 12 to 15 clear, well-lit pictures that circle the vehicle for a 360 degree view. In addition to straight-on shots of the front, back and sides, include 3/4 shots showing the vehicle from multiple angles. Also, do the best you can to avoid showing your own reflection in the car panels, chrome or hubcaps.
Interior
We suggest you use a flash when shooting interior shots. Buyers find photos of the interior very important and insightful, but shadows and bad lighting can make details very difficult to see online.
Also, make sure to shoot all the vehicle-specific, interior details that buyers really want to see, especially items that help identify optional equipment, trim level and condition.
Engine Compartment
Buyers like knowing that the engine has been maintained and that it is in stock condition. This is especially true of older and collector vehicles. Two shots of the engine compartment – one of the entire area and one close-up of any details – are usually enough.
Damage
Top Sellers on eBay Motors don't try to hide problems – they fully disclose all information. Notable issues that should be disclosed include dents, rust, interior damage, missing or inoperable parts, rips, tears, faded paint and scratches.
A considerate, helpful touch when shooting dents and dings is to place a ruler or a dollar bill next to the flaw to provide perspective on the size of the damage.
Uploading and Editing
We recommend that you upload your digital photos before building your listing. This will give you an opportunity to edit them by choosing the clearest shots to create the type of detailed, accurate view of the vehicle that customers expect.
When uploading photos, eBay's standard Sell Your Item (SYI) form lets you display up to 24 super-size photos per listing (for a $2.00 fee). Many of our Top Sellers use listing software, like Dealer Center, instead. In addition to dramatically reducing the time required to manage your eBay Motors listings, the Dealer Center software allows you to:
- Create highly effective, professional-grade listings in minutes
- Upload as many as 35 photos per listing – instantly
- Edit shots as you upload them
- Track your eBay Motors listings and manage your entire inventory easily and efficiently
- Manage your email and maximize communication with customers
Before posting any car or truck listing on eBay Motors, you'll be required to supply a minimum list of vehicle descriptors and Terms of Sale information – VIN, make/model/year, pricing, accepted methods of payment, etc.
The more information, insight and photos you can provide on a listing, the more dynamic your vehicle will appear and the more compelling your listing will be.
For cars and trucks, the eBay Motors Sell Your Vehicle Checklist proves, hands down, to be the best way to make sure you have included all the mandatory elements. Click on the link, print it out, and then check off each piece of information as you collect it. In fact, having the Checklist with you while you photograph your vehicle and checking off features as you shoot them is a wise, time-saving approach.
By using the Sell Your Vehicle Checklist, you'll leave nothing to chance.
For motorcycles, powersports, boats and other vehicles, the same ingredients contribute to an attractive and effective listing. Lots of photographs of different angles, important components and features, and any relevant information and insight you can provide on the vehicle will make for a great eBay Motors listing.

As they review your Terms of Sale, customers will be looking for answers to the following questions, especially those concerning price and shipping:
- What types of payment will you accept – cash, certified check, funds from third-party online finance companies or credit card for down payments, etc.?
- How much time do buyers have to complete the payment for the vehicle?
- How much down payment do you require?
- How soon after the listing ends do you require a deposit?
- Will you accept the use of an online escrow service like Secure Pay?
- Who pays for shipping? While out-of-state buyers are typically responsible for shipping costs, dealers are legally responsible for shipping to in-state buyers. Be explicit in your listing.
- Will you deliver? And if so, how far away?
- If you don't deliver, can you help arrange for shipping services?
- Will you only ship within the United States or internationally as well?
- Is there any form of warranty on the cars you are selling?
- If sold "as is," do you offer extended service contracts for sale?
- Will you accept bids from buyers with negative or zero feedback?
- Is the vehicle available for inspection prior to the end of the listing? If so, how should this customer arrange for an inspection with the service provider they hire?
Perhaps the biggest difference between selling on eBay Motors and selling off your lot is that you may not meet online buyers in person. Most eBay Motors buyers pay transportation companies to ship their vehicle purchases to them. In fact, shipping companies like Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS) – who offer online shipping quotes through eBay Motors – deliver thousands of cars and trucks every month.
Of course, you're not required to use or suggest DAS to buyers. Dozens of other transportation companies also provide online shipping quotes. If you have a prior relationship with a trustworthy shipping company, you might want to mention it in your Terms of Sale, offering to help buyers arrange their vehicle delivery.
Some dealers choose to provide delivery services for in-state buyers, while others offer to pick up buyers at the airport when they fly in to drive the vehicle home themselves. Either way, it's key that you address shipping in your Terms of Sale.
No matter how you handle vehicle delivery, including this information tells potential customers you're an experienced, professional eBay Motors seller.
Be sure to carefully consider the time of day and day of the week your listing will end.
Since most bidding tends to occur in the final hours of the listing, you'll want to select an end time that is convenient for buyers across all the major time zones. When scheduling your listing, eBay Motors recommends that you end it early evening, Pacific Time, in order to cover all four U.S. time zones during peak evening buying hours. (Note: eBay uses Pacific Time for all listings.)
For example, if you schedule your listing to end at 6 p.m. PST, it will end across the country at the following times:
- Los Angeles — 6:00 p.m.
- Denver — 7:00 p.m.
- Chicago — 8:00 p.m.
- NYC — 9:00 p.m.
Managing your listings will help ease buyers' concerns, ensuring their comfort and willingness to do business with you. By treating eBay customers the way you treat customers on your lot, you'll grow and develop your reputation within the eBay community.
Top Sellers on eBay Motors try to schedule time each day to check their listings and emails. They either do it themselves or assign an individual to act as their dealership's eBay Motors salesperson.
Get Started:
Listing has never been easier on eBay Motors.
During your listing, bidders compete against each other, so they want quick responses to their questions about your vehicle, price and terms. If they don't hear back from you, they're likely to move on to the next listing.
It's not uncommon for some customers to bid on your vehicle without contacting you. Try getting in touch with ALL bidders to make sure they are financed, able to complete the transaction and fully understand your Terms of Sale (including tax, title, license and shipping terms).
Sending an email to anyone who has bid on your vehicle is simple. Clicking on the "Bid History" link on your listing page will take you to the Bid History page, where you'll find a list of all the potential buyers who've bid on your vehicle. You can then contact any of them by simply clicking on their user names.
In addition to verifying buyer interest, you'll find that customer contact also helps cultivate leads, generates more sales at higher margins, and up-sells revenue-boosting products such as service agreements and financing options.
- Lower your Reserve or Buy It Now price
- Add a Buy It Now Price
- End a listing early
- Issue a Second Chance Offer on a Non-Sale Listing
- Relist a Non-Sale Listing
It's commonplace to communicate with bidders about the price during the listing process. Doing so puts you in a better position to use the new "Lower Your Price" feature (on either a Reserve or Buy It Now listing) to help close the deal.
You can lower your Reserve or Buy It Now price as many times as you like. When you do, all bidders are automatically notified by email about the lowered price.
Of course, lowering your price may affect any current bids. When you drop the Reserve or Buy It Now price below the high bidder's maximum bid, that bid will be lowered to $1.00 below the new Reserve Price, allowing the high bidder to confirm their interest in the vehicle. Equally, when you lower the Buy It Now price below the Reserve Price, the Reserve will be lowered to the same amount as the new Buy It Now price.
You can lower the Reserve or Buy It Now price on three pages – the actual listing itself, your "My eBay" page and the "Revise Your Item" page.
Add a Buy It Now price
You can add a Buy It Now price to your listing at any time prior to your Reserve being met. The new Buy It Now price can be any amount above the current high bid.
To add a Buy It Now price, go to the "Revise Your Item" page. If the new Buy It Now price is below the Reserve Price, the Reserve Price will be lowered to the same amount as the new Buy It Now price.
To qualify for the Buy It Now pricing option, you must have either a minimum feedback rating of 10 or be ID verified. Or, if you have a PayPal account, you need a minimum feedback score of 5 and must accept PayPal as a payment method.
Ending a Listing Early
In the rare instance that something goes wrong and you can't complete your listing as planned, you can end the sale before the scheduled date (though not within the last 12 hours of the listing), and all bids on your vehicle will be canceled.
IMPORTANT NOTE: While it is acceptable for a seller to end an eBay Motors listing before the reserve is met in order to sell off the lot, beware of selling the same car twice. Once the reserve is met on an eBay Motors listing (or a No Reserve listing receives its first bid), you have committed to sell the vehicle to the winning bidder. Make sure your sales staff knows when the reserve has been met on an eBay Motors listing so you can place the vehicle on the sold inventory list. If you sell a winning bidder's car to a walk-in customer, the bidder has the option of leaving negative feedback. Non-performing sellers will be investigated.
Similarly, when a vehicle is sold while the eBay Motors listing is still under Reserve, remember to end the listing. It's common courtesy to contact your bidder and let them know the item is no longer available for sale. It also creates an opportunity for you to direct the potential buyer to inventory you still have available.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Sellers are not permitted to cancel bids or end listings early in order to avoid selling an item that did not meet the desired sale price. This is considered "Reserve Fee Circumvention," and while there are legitimate reasons for ending a listing early, abuse of this option will be investigated.
Issue a Second Chance Offer or a Non-Sale Listing
- Second Chance Offer
Using the Second Chance feature is simple. At the end of any Non-Sale listing, eBay Motors will send you an email message announcing the end of the listing. In the email, you'll find a link to the Second Chance Offer tool. A similar link will appear on the closed listing page as well.
- Non-Sale Listing
In addition to the Second Chance Offer, you can easily "Relist" your vehicle, often at a reduced price.
Here's how: If your item sells the second time, the Insertion Fee ($40) for the second listing will be credited back to your eBay account. However, if it doesn't sell the second time, your account will not be credited for the second Insertion Fee ($40).
You can relist any vehicle on eBay Motors by clicking the "Relist This Item" button in the top left-hand corner of your item page or from your "My eBay" page. When relisting, consider lowering your Reserve, removing the Reserve altogether or adding more information and photos to your listing to help it sell the second time around.
Also, if someone contacted you to express interest in the vehicle during the initial listing but didn't enter a bid, you can easily accommodate the sale on eBay Motors by relisting the vehicle with an agreed-upon Buy It Now price. Your relisting will be free, you'll gain the benefit of positive Feedback and the buyer will gain peace of mind from eBay's available limited-warranty and purchase protection program, services not available if the vehicle listing does not close successfully on eBay Motors.
- As a sale at the end of the scheduled listing period
- As a sale that ends the listing early
- As a Non-Sale
Obviously, you'd prefer one of the first two options. But not every vehicle listed on eBay Motors sells, for a variety of reasons – the Start or Reserve Price was too high, poor vehicle description, ineffective photos, unfavorable Terms of Sale, lack of demand, oversupply and so on. That doesn't mean you can't sell the vehicle on eBay Motors. In fact, when a listing ends without a bid, or without a bid above the Reserve Price, you have the option of relisting it, although you'll want to amend or edit your listing to make it more attractive the second time around.
Once a listing ends as a successful sale, eBay Motors automatically sends you and the buyer an "End of Listing" email that includes all the pertinent information about the winning bid. However, we still recommend that you contact the winning bidder yourself as soon as possible to finalize the transaction, either by email or phone. You'll find that the remainder of the process is very similar to the traditional closing process, in which you handle:
- Terms of payment and/or deposit
- Financing, if needed
- Vehicle inspection
- Vehicle shipping – delivery or pickup
- Tax, title, licensing and registration
When buyers aren't within easy traveling distance, they'll often arrange for a third party to inspect the vehicle. This could take a few days to arrange but, more often than not, these inspectors will come to where the car is located.
Tax, Title, Licensing and Registration
For in-state buyers on eBay Motors, paperwork is very much the same as for any off-the-lot buyer, requiring you to collect any applicable state sales taxes you would on the transaction.
For an out-of-state buyer, most of the paperwork is similar as well, allowing you to mail documents back and forth with any customer who chooses to ship a vehicle instead of picking it up in person. Generally, an out-of-state buyer is responsible for registering the vehicle and paying any applicable sales taxes in their home state. However, it's wise for you to check with your home state's Department of Motor Vehicles to answer any questions you have about any applicable tax, title and licensing requirements.

Early this year, the eBay Motors team launched a redesign of the Collector Cars page, improving the way our many passionate car enthusiasts can interact with the site. The challenge was to surface intriguing collector cars from eBay’s large inventory in a way that was both interesting and approachable.
One of the most compelling changes is a section called “Catch of the Day,” which features editorial content lovingly curated by the folks over at Keith Martin’s Sport Car Market Magazine. Every day a new classic car is featured, from the seemingly mundane (a 1971 Datsun 240Z) to the exotic (a 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4). How are the cars chosen? The editorial mission of the site is to find cars for sale on eBay that are at least 25 years old and between $5,000 and $50,000. This sweet spot allows the team to narrow the selection down to cars that are both appealing and affordable – a winning combination.
Included in the changes to the Collectors Cars page is a “filmstrip” of nine of the most popular makes and models of cars sold in the USA. These include the Camaro, Corvette, Impala, GTO, Mercedes SL, Mustang, Porche 356 and 911, and the VolksWagon Beetle.

Clicking on a photo of the car will take you to an in-depth account of that model of car, including a breakdown of features by generation and year. Not sure when the split-window feature was introduced on the Corvette? You can find it here. (It was 1963 – coincidentally the same year that the name Sting Ray came into being.) You can also find pricing details that have the current market prices for each generation, rated from Fair to Good to Excellent. If that weren’t enough, there are also links to cars currently being sold on eBay, in case your car lust gets to be too much.

The Tools to Succeed
Our most successful dealers find that high-speed Internet access (broadband) is essential to efficiently list and track their inventory on eBay Motors. High-speed examples include: cable, DSL and satellite. Contact your local phone or cable company for more information.
Solution Provider Listing Software
Most successful dealers rely on Solution Providers, allowing them to spend more time closing deals and less time creating listings.
Most listing software involves an additional charge, but in the long run you'll save time and money on each listing. Ask for the details on exact charges before deciding which software provider to use.
Vehicle Description
Honesty and full disclosure lead to more sales and greater profits.
Photos
To save time, fill out a copy of the Passenger Vehicle Listing Checklist as you photograph the vehicle.
Terms of Sale

Managing a Listing
Top sellers track price and conversion trends on the site to establish a strategy for listing most, if not all, of their inventory on eBay Motors.
Working with Bidders
Top Sellers communicate with bidders throughout the entire process to pre-empt problems, up-sell and build buyer trust.
eBay Feedback Forum
At the end of any transaction, you can leave feedback that is positive, negative or neutral for your trading partner, depending upon the experience.
QUESTION: How much does it cost to list a vehicle on eBay Motors?
ANSWER: For every type of vehicle you may list, eBay Motors offers an affordable, straight forward, two-tier fee structure. You'll enjoy per-vehicle pricing with no backdoor charges.
QUESTION: How long will my listing last?
ANSWER: Although you can list a car for 3, 5, 7, 10 or 21 days (10 and 21-day listings are available for an additional fee), our most successful dealers find that 5 or 7 days work best.
QUESTION: What if my vehicle doesn't sell?
ANSWER: You may relist any Non-Sale vehicle. If it sells the second time around, your second listing fee is refunded. See our Free Relist Policy.
QUESTION: How many listings will result in sales?
ANSWER: How much you sell really depends on how you price your vehicles, how well you "sell" or merchandise your vehicles, and how you communicate with potential buyers. It also depends on the market demand for the vehicles you list, just like it does on your retail lot. Top Sellers with sophisticated, eBay-dedicated businesses sell more vehicles for more money than beginners, but all dealers can quickly become Top Sellers.
QUESTION: Why is it important to supply all of the correct information?
ANSWER: Providing accurate vehicle information and clear Terms of Sale develops trust in both you and the car or truck you are selling. It also allows buyers to complete their appropriate homework, like using the VIN to run vehicle history reports or check pricing guides. Answering all of a buyer's questions — and eliminating the need for a test-drive — is your goal. You can achieve this by providing a "virtual walk around," complete with photos that will supply enough information for the buyer to TRUST the vehicle. The better the information is in the listing, the more likely you will be to sell the car.
QUESTION: What do I do if a bidder doesn't pay?
ANSWER: While it is rare, there are occasions when deals fall through on eBay Motors just as they do on the lot. The best way to prevent unpaid items is to contact and validate bidders' intentions before the listing closes. If you cannot contact the winning bidder or agree upon mutually favorable terms for completing the transaction, use the following guidelines: Contact the buyer after your listing has ended. Like you, buyers face emergencies or computer problems. Your high bidder may not be able to respond right away. Send an email specifying your payment, deposit and delivery terms to your winning bidder within three days after the listing ends. Consult the eBay Motors Help Section for the latest information on dealing with non-paying bidders and requesting Final Value Fee refunds if you can't contact the high bidder. Consider relisting. If the vehicle sells, the original listing fee will be refunded. When using the Buy It Now option, eBay's Immediate Deposit Requirement through PayPal is another way to protect your listings from non-paying bidders. Until a buyer completes payment of a seller-determined deposit of $1 – $500, the item remains available. Otherwise, the first buyer to complete their PayPal payment officially wins your vehicle.
QUESTION: When should I view feedback or post feedback?
ANSWER: As an eBay seller, you can use the Feedback system to "qualify" potential buyers, examining how they've behaved in previous eBay transactions with other sellers. Viewing each potential buyer's feedback can answer questions about how that person conducts business. Next to any eBay member's user ID, you'll notice a number – a Feedback Rating – in parentheses. For example: Skippy (125) tells you that eBay member "Skippy" has received positive comments from at least 125 other eBay members.
QUESTION: How does the Feedback Forum work?
ANSWER: The Feedback Rating system is simple. You get one point for each positive comment, zero for a neutral comment, and one point subtracted for each negative comment. Members with a Feedback Rating of 10 (or more positive comments) receive a star icon.
QUESTION: What hardware do I need?
ANSWER: Selling on eBay motors requires a computer and Internet access. If you have any questions about hardware or connecting to the Internet, please call 1-866-MOTORS4.
For cars and trucks, the eBay Motors Sell Your Vehicle Checklist proves, hands down, to be the best way to make sure you include all the mandatory elements. Click on the link, print it out, then check off each piece of information as you collect it. In fact, having the Checklist with you while you photograph your vehicle, and checking off features as you shoot them, is a wise, time-saving approach.
